Koko the Panda

A slow, serene panda whose pace matches a deep breath. The pet for users who want quiet over chatter.

  • sleep-track-focused users
  • people who want a low-energy companion
  • meditators on the calmer end of the practice spectrum

Personality

Koko is the panda. Slow movements, gentle expression, the visual equivalent of a long exhale. The animation cycles are deliberately longer than the cat or fox, which makes Koko feel like she takes up less psychic space.

Where Luna observes and Milo encourages, Koko just exists. She is the companion most users pick for the sleep and stillness side of the app. During the Sleep Ceremony, Koko fades with the screen. During stillness training, Koko sits as still as you do, which feels companionable rather than competitive.

Pandas are not a meditation cliche by accident. The visual language of slowness reads as calm across cultures, and Koko leans into that without irony.

Evolution stages

Every Hope pet evolves through four stages as your practice grows. The shape changes; the relationship does not.

  1. 1. Baby

    Panda cub

A small round panda with proportionally larger eyes. The cub-stage Koko is slightly more active than adult Koko, in the way real panda cubs are.

  2. 2. Young

    Young panda

Limbs catch up to the head. Movements slow down to the signature panda pace. The serene expression begins to settle in.

  3. 3. Adult

    Adult panda

Full-grown Koko, with the unmistakable black-and-white silhouette. Animation cycle slows further; pose holds longer.

  4. 4. Sage

    Sage panda

Slightly more weathered colouring suggests a Koko who has been through many seasons of practice. Pose holds even longer.

Role in the practice

Pair with sleep tracking and stillness training. Koko's slow animation cycles read as restful rather than energetic, which suits wind-down workflows.

Inside the Hope iOS app

Koko appears on the Pet tab, widgets, and Dynamic Island. She is most expressive during meditation and sleep sessions, where the visual language of slowness matches the practice.

Frequently asked

Why are pandas associated with calm?
Slow movement reads as calm across most cultures. Pandas are also a familiar shape in Western and East Asian iconography, which makes Koko legible without needing introduction. The choice is aesthetic, not zoological.
Can Koko replace the meditation timer?
No. Koko is a companion. The meditation timer is the active tool. Koko reacts to completed sessions; she does not pace your breath.
Does Koko work for users who do not like pandas?
There are seven other companions to choose. If panda iconography does not appeal, pick the owl, the koala, or the cat for similar calm energy.
